The Scientists and Scientific Institutions that Developed Our Programs
Dr. Merzenich’s Scientific Credentials
Two of the programs that we use at Mind Matters Clinics were developed by Dr. Michael Merzenich of the University of California at San Fransisco.
Mind Matters Clinics prides itself on using only the most current, validated and reliable research available.
Dr. Merzenich is one of the country’s most prominent brain scientists. He received his PhD almost 40 years ago from Johns Hopkins, which is one of the country’s top 5 medical/science universities. He currently leads the Keck Center for Integrative Neuroscience at the University of California in San Francisco, which is also one of the top 5 medical/science universities in the country.
Dr. Merzenich has been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, the “honor society” of leading scientists. This is a very prestigious honor, since members are elected by their fellow scientists. Dr. Merzenich has been recognized in this way primarily because he is one of the world’s leading experts in the field of “brain plasticity”. Brain plasticity is the study of how the brain can change, for better or for worse, at any age. Dr. Merzenich was one of the key pioneers who proved scientifically that, under the right circumstances, the human brain can change for the better at any age.
A Track Record of Building Practical Tools that Help People
Dr. Merzenich has a long track record of inventing practical tools that improve the lives of everyday people. About twenty-five years ago, he co-invented the cochlear implant, which cures deafness by “rewiring” the auditory processing mechanisms in the brain. Over ten years ago, he invented a program that “fine tunes” or rewires the brain of school children and adolescents with dyslexia and other language/learning challenges. The program, FastForWord, has been used by more than a million students, with significant, life-changing results. Recently, he has created the Brain Fitness Program for the aging and pathological brain. Dr. Merzenich and his team have more than ninety patents on their work.
Working with 50 of the World’s Leading Researchers
In addition, Dr. Merzenich collaborates closely with more than 50 of the world’s leading neuroscience researchers. Here in the USA, the list includes professors at institutions such as Johns Hopkins, MIT, Stanford, Yale, and the Mayo Clinic. But the team also includes neuroscientists from around world, including researchers at Cambridge University in England, The Max Planck Institute in Germany, and the Riken Institute in Japan. It’s truly a “dream team” of the world’s leading brain experts. Some of these researchers provide guidance on product design, while others are helping to validate the efficacy of the programs.
